New York Mesothelioma Lawyers

Danger Asbestos Warning SignMalignant mesothelioma, a terminal carcinoma of the mesothelium, is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. Unfortunately, New York is one of the highest risk states for both asbestos exposure and terminal mesothelioma.

The mechanism by which mesothelioma occurs has not been entirely elucidated, but asbestos is thought to mediate incorporation of foreign DNA into the host cells, whereby causing inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, activation of oncogenes and proto-oncogenes, and activation of telomerase. Additionally, asbestos may play a role in the death of NKs (natural killers), lymphocytes that mediate the death of tumorigenic cells.

Mesothelioma can occur in three locations in the body, the:

  • Pleural mesothelium โ€“ pleural mesothelioma is the most commonly occurring, found three fourths of mesothelioma cases. Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleura, lining the chest cavity.
  • Peritoneal mesothelium โ€“ peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most commonly occurring, found in one fifth of mesothelioma cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the peritoneum, lining the abdominal cavity.
  • Pericardial mesothelium โ€“ pericardial mesothelioma is the most rarely occurring, found in only one twentieth of mesothelioma cases. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the pericardium, the heart sac.

A diagnosis of mesothelioma carries a poor prognosis. The key to improving this prognosis is early detection. If you have been exposed to asbestos in the workplace or at home, ensure you pay attention to the symptoms of mesothelioma and consult your medical doctor.
