The Tuscaloosanews.com recently released a report detailing the lack of regulation and other information on the proper demolition of asbestos-ridden family homes in Alabama. This problem has exposed major issues with asbestos removal throughout the US and may extend to New York.

Because the tornados that have ravaged the area, specifically the April 27th tornado, many single family homes are necessarily being demolished. One company is simply dousing these homes in water before demolishing them, claiming that this removes the risk of the asbestos poisoning to workers and those nearby.

Yet, even the inhalation of a few particles can potentially lead to mesothelioma years down the road. In fact, OSHA has strict guidelines regulating the safety of workers in conditions where they might be exposed to asbestos. It would seem that in the confusing aftermath of the tornados, proper procedures are being neglected for a quick solution.

It appears that the City Council of Tuscaloosa is going to begin creating stricter regulations for removal of homes containing or possibly containing asbestos. Nonetheless, it is important for all volunteers and workers to recognize the risks associated with asbestos exposure and be vigilant.

Asbestos poisoning can result in a number of conditions, the most severe being mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. If you have been exposed to asbestos, you should speak to your medical doctor immediately.
